Employee Background Checks
What if all you had to do to avoid the costly mistake of hiring the wrong person was as easy as running a background check.
Background checks should be updated for each employee every 5 years.
How exciting...a new employee! Your business is growing and you're looking to bring in some new blood to your office. New energy, new ideas...new problems? What if all you had to do to avoid the costly mistake of hiring the wrong person was as easy as running a background check.
One of the last, but extremely important, steps in hiring a prospective employee should be to run a background check. You invest a lot of time and money in posting to job search sites, sorting through resumes, and interviewing in your search for just the right employee to become a part of your team so why not take the extra time to acquire a background check. Does the job require them driving for company business? Best make sure they don't have DUI's or an invalid driver's license. Will your prospective employee be working with others in your office? It's your responsibility to make sure they don't have a violent record. If an employee does harm to others on your clock, are you liable because you were negligent in your hiring process? If they will have access to your bank accounts it would be prudent to make sure they don't have a bad credit history, bank liens, or bankruptcies that could mean they aren't good with handling money.
There are multiple kinds of background screenings like confirming their credentials, making reference checks, criminal records checks, or financial history checks to name a few. Performing background checks should not only be done on potential new hires, but also current employees. It can help you uncover any potential issues lurking in the background that could end up costing you and your business a lot of money. It may also be a requirement for your E&O insurance to maintain background checks on all employees as a condition of coverage so be sure to check your policy.
